P.S. Vauxhall chevett points do work in it, but you need to remove a tag from them.

1958 Dennis F8. Water Tender

NHS 196

This appliance was ordered by the Western Area Fire Brigade on 1stApril 1958 and left the works of Dennis Bros.... of Guildford on  21stAugust 1958.

It served mostly at Greenock as a retained appliance but also spent some time at Gourock, Port Glasgow and Paisley. During November 1976 it was disposed of by auction in Glasgow and bought by the transport company,Tennants of Forth, who planned to have the appliance completely restored to original condition but instead, it lay deteriorating for many years in the corner of a storage shed .

When the Preservation Group first saw the appliance in late 1995, it was in extremely poor condition and only just roadworthy. It was purchased in July 1996 and driven back to Glasgow under its own power.

Old with the New in the Background

Glasgow City Council provided our group with storage facilities and over the next four years the appliance was virtually rebuilt and restored to original condition and livery, all the work being carried out by members of the preservation group. The paint work was done by theColin Hutton Groupafter our own group had completed most the bodywork preparation.

This appliance is powered by a 6 cylinderRolls RoyceB60 4250c.c. petrol engine which develops 120 b.h.p. and is rated at 29.4 h.p. Petrol consumption is approximately 7 MPG. (on a good day)Unladen weight of around four Ton giving a power to weight ratio of  30 B hp/TON

The vehicle had the following specification when built around 1958 :
Rolls Royce Six Cylinder Engine Developing 126 B hp at around 2600 RPM, .
With a Four speed Close ratio Dennis Crash Gearbox, giving a max speed around 60 mph.
Body built by hand in Dennis factory in Guilford, with a Dennis Number Two  500 GPM Pump and a 400 Gallon Water tank feeding a First aid pump via a Five way Valve, with provision to feed the main Pump.

During 1970 the original engine was replaced with a new ex army Rolls Royce B60 engine. The multi fuel carburettor was removed and the original carburettor refitted as was the Delco Remy distributor. The new Rolls Royce engine  then, cost £75.00. from the army.

In 1958, a Dennis F8, fire appliance cost between £1,600 and £2,000
