Days Out and the S.E.C.C.

On Friday 13th. October 2000, Bill Gordon and myself decided to take NHS 196 back to its home station of Greenock. The appliance performed perfectly as we made our way along the M8 Motorway, Bill remarked that it seemed to perform even better the closer we got to its old station.

At Greenock Fire Station, the duty watch were agog as the appliance swung into the yard. ADO Dave Adams had seen our arrival and was on hand to welcome us, he arranged photographs of the vehicle to be taken both in Greenock Fire Station and at Custom House Quay. Dave Adams is very keen on local history and showed us photographs and documents relating to the history of firefighting in Greenock. Later he arranged for the old station within the Town Hall to be opened in order that some photographs could be taken with NHS 196 outside the station it first served at in 1958.

The appliance had to be reversed in and memories of my time at the North Fire Station in Glasgow flooded back as both stations were similar in that they offered only inches to spare ! Once this manoeuvre had been completed, we were joined by Councillor Robert Jackson, Convenor of the Police and Fire Committee of Inverclyde District Council, who was delighted to see the return of Greenock's old appliance.

The Scot Model exhibition took place at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow on Sunday 26th. November. We were invited to take part by the organisers and throughout the day NHS 196 proved to be quite an attraction with children of all ages.
